SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – Three historical sites in the Charleston area closed Thursday in anticipation of severe weather from Hurricane Helene.
While the storm will not directly impact South Carolina, outer bands from the strong hurricane will bring gusty wind, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes to the area through early Friday morning.
Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park, and Charles Pinckney National Historic Site are temporarily closed for the safety of visitors and staff.
“All concession-operated ferry trips to Fort Sumter have been suspended and no special park use permits will be issued until further notice,” the National Park Service said.
The sites will remain closed until the severe weather event passes, and the National Park Service conducts post-storm assessments to determine the facilities are safe.
