BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Are Baton Rouge’s interstates and highways safe? Baton Rouge Police say yes. On Sept. 15, well-known wife, mom and community leader Teressa Calligan was shot and killed while driving. Police say a vehicle pulled alongside her and opened fire. Investigators have found no motive and no suspects. This follows several other highway and roadway shootings in the Baton Rouge area that have claimed lives since the beginning of August. BRProud asked BRPD why this has been a continued problem. They say these fall into two categories: Road rage incidents and targeted victims who are driving. Louisiana senator to introduce gun safety bill after BRProud investigation into child gun deaths “There have been prior altercations between the victim and the person that did the shooting," said BRPD Public Information Officer L'Jean McKneely. BRProud did some digging. The statistics tell the story about gun violence on the nation’s roadways. From 2014 to 2023, road rage shootings have increased by over 400%, according to Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit group that works to catalog every incident of gun violence in the United States. Louisiana tied for 24th nationally in people killed in road rage shootings in 2023, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control and against gun violence. Statewide, Baton Rouge ranked second in highway shootings, just below New Orleans over the last several years, according to Gun Violence Archive. Everytown for Gun Safety said road rage and highway shootings are highest in states that have permitless gun conceal carry laws, like Louisiana. Close Thanks for signing up! Subscribe Now BRProud Daily News SIGN UP NOW “States that don’t require a permit to carry in public had nearly triple the rate of road rage shooting victimizations than states with the most protected standards," said Sarah Burd-Sharps, senior director research of Everytown for Gun Safety.
