Southern University shares statement on student killed in Baton Rouge wreck

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Southern University issued a statement Thursday about a freshman ag student who was killed in a wreck Tuesday night in Baton Rouge. Counselors are available for students and employees.
Donovan Burton, 19, died at the scene of the wreck, according to the Baton Rouge Police Department. A 19-year-old woman in the car was rescued and pulled from the vehicle.
The university issued the following statement:
"Southern University and A&M College extends condolences to the family, classmates, and friends of Donovan Burton, a freshman majoring in agricultural sciences. Donovan and another student were involved in a tragic car accident Tuesday night. Donovan unfortunately died at the scene. The other victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital."

Before 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of South I-110, a 2003 Honda Accord was heading south on I-110 when the front tire became locked due to a malfunction. Police said the car hit a concrete barrier and slid across the top of it before striking a concrete support pillar for the Capital Access overpass and catching on fire.
