University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center will celebrate breast cancer survivors during the ninth “Bras for a Cause” fundraiser. The celebration of survivorship returns during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, after a hiatus during the pandemic, according to a news release. It will be hosted by the UH Geauga Medical Center Auxiliary on Oct. 19 at the Sisters of Notre Dame Community Hall at 1300 Auburn Road in Chardon. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the charity event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $15 by calling the Wish-U-Well gift shop at 440-285-6039 or visiting it. All proceeds will benefit patient needs at the UH Seidman Cancer Center at UH Geauga Medical Center, the release stated. The tea luncheon was previously hosted in 2019, and since its inception has raised more than $35,000 for local cancer care. Guests will create decorated bras for the popular charity event, write inspirational notes for patients currently battling the disease, and remember loved ones whose lives were claimed by the illness. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, except for skin cancers, and accounts for about 30% or one in three of all new cases in women each year. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. “This fundraiser was born out of a deep commitment to the community to inspire the gift of giving and educate the public on the importance of screenings to help promote early detection,” Dr. Maria Madden at UH Geauga Medical Center stated in the release. “Caregivers including new physicians will attend. The fundraiser brings people together with a common purpose, caring for one another.” Space is limited and pre-registration is suggested by Oct. 1. All decorated items must be turned in at the Wish-U-Well gift shop by Oct. 7. “So often in this world we feel like we can’t make a difference, this is a way we can,” Karen Cico, volunteer services coordinator at UH Geauga, stated in the release. “My mother battled breast cancer, hearing the stories of survivorship gives us all a sense of joy, a sense of hope, worthy of celebration.”
