Myles Garrett, like a Civil War veteran trudging down a dusty dirt road with his fellow soldiers while leaning on a wooden crutch, is ready for his next battle, despite dealing with multiple injuries. Garrett practiced Sept. 26 after sitting out practice a day earlier because of injuries to his foot, Achilles and thigh. Unless he has a major setback between now and kickoff, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year will be in the starting lineup Sept. 29 when the Browns (1-2) face the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. “Obviously, there are multiple things, so dealing with them as they come and no excuses,” Garrett said before practice. “Just go out there and ball. I’m not concerned about causing any further damage.” Garrett played on 42 defensive snaps (58 percent) in the 21-15 loss to the New York Giants. He did not sack Daniel Jones, but Garrett’s nine quarterback pressures were the most among pass rushers. His win rate of 45.8 percent also led the NFL. Minshew played for the Colts last year, and if he still has nightmares about Garrett it’s understandable. Garrett had two strip sacks of Minshew in the Browns’ 39-38 victory in Indianapolis. He had nine total tackles and also blocked a field goal. Minshew lost another fumble and threw an interception, but he also threw two touchdown passes and rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Garrett doesn’t expect anything different from Minshew this time. “He’s a gunslinger,” Garrett said. “When he gets hot, he can be really darn good. We saw last year he can make it into a shootout quickly, so we’re just trying to keep him under wraps. He doesn’t like to really scramble to get yards. We’re not going to worry about him being a runner, but just staying on our feet and making those plays before he can get going.” David Njoku practiced on a limited basis with the #Browns today. He missed the last two games with right ankle injury. Wide receiver Davante Adams and defensive end Maxx Crosby, two stars on the Raiders team, on podcasts said they believe Minshew gives them the best chance of winning. Those comments helped persuade Pierce to keep things status quo. The Raiders backup quarterback is Aidan O’Connell. “What I said was, I need to get with the players and evaluate the film, so there’s no issue,” Pierce told reporters covering the Raiders. “Gardner Minshew is the quarterback.” Minshew has just seven carries for 18 yards this season. He rushed three times for 29 yards for the Colts in the game with the Browns last year. Minshew this year is completing 73.7 percent of his passes this year (73 of 99) for 747 yards with three touchdown passes and three interceptions. “He bought some time on some passes and made a couple plays with his feet (in the Colts game),” defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “We have to guard against both of those. He hasn’t been designed running very much this year, but everybody we face this year has that component. “We have to be ready for that because he does have good mobility generally. Ball’s coming out either really fast or he’s holding it a long time. We have to take advantage of the opportunities when he gives us chances.” The Browns want to establish their defense early. Opponents have scored 44 points on them in the first half but only 23 in the second half.
