Parts of Northern VA and central MD were hit with a band of heavy rainfall this morning, prompting flood warnings as 2-4" of rain fell. This activity has wrapped up as the front responsible for producing this activity fizzles out and moves north away from the DMV. This gives us a much-needed dry break, with little to no additional rain expected this afternoon. Cloudy skies will remain as we sit between the departing storm system to our north and Hurricane Helene to our south. A surge of tropical moisture ahead of Helene's landfall in Florida tonight will spark light rain but nothing significant that we should be worried about. Helene will impact the Big Bend of Florida tonight as a major hurricane, and life-threatening storm surge, torrential rainfall, and powerful winds will affect the Southeast into Friday. Back closer to home, we won't see the outer bands from Helene until mid-day. These bands won't be as strong as they were over the Southeast, but they will bring a burst of heavier rain across the DMV, especially in our southern counties in VA. A Flood Watch has been put into place tomorrow for Madison and Rappahannock Counties, which is where the heaviest rainfall from Helene is expected over the same areas that got drenched this morning. For the rest of the area, heavy rain could fall for a few hours in the afternoon before quickly moving on or dissipating back down to showers into Friday evening and Friday night. While a few localized instances of flooding can't be ruled out, the rest of us shouldn't see any issues tomorrow. A general inch to inch and a half could fall through Friday night, which is nowhere near what they'll be dealing with in the Southeast (10-15" is expected in the mountains of Georgia and the Carolinas). The remnant low from Helene will get caught up and spin away just west of the DMV into the weekend. This means we will see more unsettled weather, though Saturday will bring a window of opportunity for some sunshine and most of the day to be dry between isolated showers. On Sunday, Helene's remnant low will get pushed overhead, leading to overcast skies and soggy conditions for most of the day. Showers will linger into Monday and Tuesday until a front swings down from Canada and finally sweeps the leftover tropical moisture out of there. The additional rainfall through Tuesday will be light enough to be helpful and not a problem. Sunshine and cooler conditions finally return for the middle of next week and the start of October. 7-Day Forecast: Today: Cloudy with spotty showers.
