WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — In the early 1990s, Sunflower Communion Action was formed to fight for Kansans' to achieve justice and equality. The group uses KYOM 104.9, a radio station, to get their word out. "We know that people power is the best power," said David Chiles, Sunflower Community Action interim director. Sunflower Community Action is using it to spread awareness about social issues seen in the community. "Really giving voice to those individuals who feel like they are powerless and uplifting those individuals so they can be able to speak for themselves, speak about their issues, tell their stories," Chiles said. Little Bellas puts girls on path to friendship and strength Once a month, the grassroots group meets to identify problems on topics like housing and immigration. "They look for us to us, to be able to help them get whatever the issues are resolved," Chiles said. The members brainstorm ways to take action and who to hold accountable. "It's about us helping one another and linking arms, walking together," Chiles added. The nonprofit has sent members on trips to help with advocacy work. There are about 150 members in Sunflower Community Action.
