A marquee clash in the West Jersey Football League’s Capitol Division is on tap this weekend. The winner of Friday night’s game featuring Hopewell Valley at Allentown will improve to 3-0 in the division and have the inside track to winning the championship. All of the other 11 Mercer County-affiliated teams, with the exception of Lawrence, will also go head-to-head in division battles. The latest United Power Rankings have the following teams currently in the state playoffs: Hopewell Valley (No. 4 in South Group III), Allentown (No. 10 in South Group III), Lawrence (No. 15 in South Group IV) and Notre Dame (No. 15 in Non-Public B). Here’s what to watch for in Week Four of the WJFL. Friday Hopewell Valley (4-0) at Allentown (3-1), 6 p.m. Make it four straight games with more than 40 points for Hopewell to start the season. The Bulldogs kept it rolling last Friday with a 45-12 win against Nottingham where quarterback Milan Desai passed for four touchdowns and ran for another. Allentown is coming off a 26-14 win at Steinert where quarterback Matthew Schweitzer and running back Sean McCaffery led the Redbirds to 270 rushing yards. But even playing at home, it would be surprising if Allentown is able to pull off a win against this well-rounded Hopewell team with weapons all over the place. Pemberton (2-1) at Lawrence (3-1), 6 p.m. Lawrence suffered its first setback last Friday when it went on the road and lost a tight defensive battle with Bordentown, 10-7. The Cardinals will look to shake that off and get their running game going against a Pemberton team which was a 41-21 winner over Maple Shade last Saturday. The Hornets are the only undefeated team in the National Division. Lawrence won the last meeting between these schools in 2021. Saturday Trenton (3-1) at Ewing (0-4), 11 a.m. Trenton was a 40-0 winner over West Windsor last Friday in its first shutout since 2020. Keyshawn Warthen continued to dominate as a running quarterback with 332 total yards and five touchdowns, and it’s hard to see Ewing slowing that down. But the Blue Devils look ready to counterpunch after rushing for 354 yards and four touchdowns in an overtime loss at Robbinsville last Friday. Trenton has yet to lose a Valley Division game. Notre Dame (2-2) at Steinert (2-2), 11 a.m. Notre Dame had its best all-around performance of the season last Friday when quarterback Julian Matera totaled five touchdowns and defensive end Will Renda collected two sacks in a 35-0 win at Hightstown. Steinert has been solid with convincing victories over Cherry Hill West and Hightstown, but on paper the Spartans lack the firepower to keep up with Notre Dame. Hightstown (0-4) at Nottingham (0-4), Noon A winless team will get its first win here. Nottingham looks like the favorite as it has scored 34 points compared to Hightstown’s 13 through four games. Tymir Carmichael and August Cassidy each rushed for one touchdown last Friday at Hopewell, and the Northstars will aim to build on that while limiting their mistakes. West Windsor-Plainsboro (0-4) at Hamilton West (1-3), 2 p.m. Hamilton West’s defense came up clutch last Saturday as it led the Hornets to a 13-6 win at Princeton. The offense rushed for 201 yards, and that will be the key in this game as well after West Windsor was torched on the ground by Trenton for its fourth straight loss. Robbinsville (2-2) at Princeton (1-3), 2 p.m. Robbinsville won what coach Andrew Patterson described as an instant classic last Friday at home against Ewing. The Ravens trailed 27-7 in the second quarter before rallying to tie it when Noah Schwartz returned a kickoff 65 yards late in regulation. In overtime, Will Raftery caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Yablonowitz followed by a Drew Schwartz extra point to take the lead, and then the defense sealed the victory by stopping Ewing on a two-point conversion after a touchdown. Robbinsville now looks to stay undefeated atop the Valley Division when it travels to face a Princeton team that has been inconsistent on offense. The Tigers’ only win was 20-13 over Ewing two weeks ago.
