RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that it is prepared to address any potential weather impacts of Hurricane Helene that are forecasted to begin impacting the Commonwealth on the evening on Thursday, Sept. 26. Impacts from the storm are expected to be felt particularly in southwest and parts of Central Virginia. How is VDOT preparing? The department said its crews are ready to respond to road hazards and any damage from the storm. Ahead of its arrival, crews have been inspecting drainage facilities and clearing them where necessary, getting trucks and equipment ready and ensuring that debris and tree removal crews are on standby. How can drivers stay safe? Drivers are asked to pay attention to local weather reports and announcements from officials and limit their travel based on conditions along their route. Before driving, folks can also check road conditions on the 511 Virginia mobile app or its website. The department urges drivers to stay away from downed wires and not to approach or touch tree limbs that are entangled with wires, as they could be extremely dangerous. The department's crews have to wait for the power company to remove any electrical hazard before removing downed trees or other debris in the road. Drivers should ensure they follow these tips while driving: Follow all “road closed” signage.  If driving, remember that headlights should always be on when wipers are on.  If traffic signals are out, drivers should treat intersections as four-way stops or follow local law enforcement’s direction.  “Turn around, don’t drown” — Do not attempt to travel through flooded roadways. Be alert to debris, downed trees and power lines.  Move over for emergency crews operating in or near roadways.  Be alert to High Wind Advisories, especially on bridges or taller structures. High-profile vehicles like tractor-trailers, SUVs or box trucks are especially vulnerable and should not cross a bridge when a High Wind Advisory is posted.  Drivers should report any hazards like flooding or downed trees to the department’s 24-hour Customer Service Center by visiting  VDOT's website or calling 800-367-7623.
