Lexington, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Hurricane Helene continues its trajectory across the Southeast, residents of Kentucky are bracing for the storm’s remnants, which are expected to bring significant weather changes to the Commonwealth. ABC 36 meteorologists predict wind gusts could reach speeds of 40 to 50 miles per hour in some areas, creating hazardous conditions on the roads and at home. “This is central Kentucky we don’t see sustained wind gusts like this very often. So remember you are not more powerful than mother nature, stay inside, stay away from those windows, and be prepared to clean up afterward, remember your safety is more important than anything else,” said Emily Fay with the Lexington Fayette Emergency Management center. The Lexington Fayette Emergency Management Center emphasizes the importance of preparation in light of the anticipated heavy rain and potential flooding. According to the ABC 36 Storm Team, Kentucky could see substantial rainfall that may lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. In advance of the storm, AAA advises drivers to ensure their vehicles are in top condition. Key safety checks include confirming that windshield wipers are functioning properly, all headlights and taillights are operational, and tire pressure is at the appropriate level. Emergency management officials also urge motorists to heed warnings and turn around if they encounter flooded roads. “Never drive through puddles of water, you don’t how deep it is. It could be surprising, your 6 inches could suddenly be 6 feet, the roads gone underneath it, and you have no way of knowing. And being a little inconvenienced is better than losing your life. So if you see a puddle or standing water on the road, turn around don’t drown,” said Fay. At home, residents can take proactive steps to safeguard their property. Experts recommend bringing in outdoor furniture and securing items such as trampolines with heavy weights to prevent them from being displaced by strong winds. Kentucky Utilities is preparing for potential power outages that may accompany the storm. “Well we’re watching the weather, we have about 500 line technicians and contractors who are ready to respond if we get bad weather here in Kentucky,” said Daniel Lowry with Kentucky Utilities. Residents are encouraged to assemble emergency kits, which should include essentials such as water, non-perishable food, and flashlights. “In the event that you lose power, it’s time to bring out your emergency kit, hopefully, you have if not time to put one together. It should be a kit you have that’s good for 72 hours has medications, supplies, food, so if you lose power you can still eat, you don’t have to worry about anything not being safe, and you’ll have everything you need to survive,” said Fay. As Kentucky braces for the effects of Hurricane Helene, local authorities are urging all residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
