CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sharing mental health struggles isn’t easy but for Beth Gatlin it has been transformative. Her mental health journey is a source of inspiration behind her music which she’s sharing on the, “This is My Brave CharMeck,” stage. Gatlin said, “it’s an opportunity to share these secrets that we used to keep. And now we celebrate the power that we have in telling our stories. The secrets is really what makes you sick. Because once you speak it, you can find the path to, you know, the truth, which is we are worthy and we are enough, and we have all the support we just have to ask.” The show is a localized version of a national project, showcasing what mental struggles look like hoping to save lives one story or in this case…song at a time. Owner of the Wandering Cup coffeehouse, Melanie McIntyre said, “I think by her sharing her story, she’s um, she’s providing a voice to the people that maybe feel like they are struggling or they don’t have a voice, and she’s just creating an opportunity for people to have the confidence for themselves to go after what it is that they have, whatever their dream is, but also to overcome, like whatever they’re struggling with.” Gatlin only learned how to play a few years ago but her verses are already making an impact.
