CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Flooding relief could soon be on the way for the Phillips Community. Charleston County Council awarded a contract for the Phillips Community Drainage Project on Wednesday evening. Residents there have struggled with stormwater flooding for the last 20 years due to their location in Charleston County. "The water don't flow fast enough… We've been fighting this problem for a while- for at least 10 years or better," said Richard Habersham, president of the Phillips Community. Gulf Stream Construction is spearheading the $2.3 million project in the Phillips community."The project originated because its been 20-plus years of large storm events. So these canal improvements will be increasing the flow capacity and reduce the staging of storm water during these large events," said John Prorock, a Stormwater Project Manager with Public Works. In addition to widening the canals the company will install new pipes at 7 road crossings so water can better flow out of the area. The crews will begin the project downstream and expect residents to see immediate relief. "This is going to be the best solution we can come up with because as tides recede it will allow that area to drain much faster," said Prorock. Habersham said residents are happy the county passed the project, and they will be seeing flooding relief soon. He says the next step is for the state to maintain the ditches to prevent stormwater overflow."So, while the county is doing its part now the state's got to do its part and maintain the ditches," said Habersham. The project is set to begin in October and take about six months.
