New Roads man found guilty of simple burglary after oneday trial

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- A man was found guilty by a Pointe Coupee Parish jury Wednesday in connection to a burglary at a New Roads car maintenance shop.
District Attorney Tony Clayton’s office said the jury took only 30 minutes to convict Leo Wilson, 40, of New Roads, of simple burglary. Post-trial motions are set for Nov. 14.
According to the district attorney's office, the car maintenance shop owner called 911 on the night of March 9, 2023, to report a potential burglary. Wilson was reportedly found rummaging inside a car with a shattered window before a police officer ordered him out of the car. Wilson then reportedly fled on foot to a field.
After he was found, an officer's body camera footage reportedly showed Wilson confessing to breaking the car window.
“Mr. Wilson decided to go to trial, but we had a rock solid case,” said Clayton. “He has three prior convictions, including two counts of burglary and possession of drugs, so we will be asking for the toughest sentence possible, which is 12 years. He’s not someone we want out victimizing our community.”
