FLORENCE — The Florence High varsity boys’ soccer team spent time waiting while moving Wednesday. The first real steady rain of the season drenched the field for about an hour. So, while the Flashes hoped and waited for that to let up, they also waited to find a crack in the armor of their opponents from Northern Burlington High. Once they did, head coach Kyle Ballay’s players found a way to even the game twice before coming up with a way to overtake the Greyhounds. With two goals in the last 10 minutes, Florence’s waiting game paid off as it surprised Northern, 3-2. “In the first half, we had to adjust to the rain. In the second half, we adjusted, not only to that, but also to being down, 1-0, so early,” Flashes senior Derek Tindall said. Yes, the visitors took control of the game five minutes in when junior forward Cameron Langley led sophomore midfielder Lukas Kekesi for the opening goal. “The rain just made things a little more difficult,” Langley said. “I don’t think it affected the way we played.” Kekesi’s goal stood for about 54 minutes. But when Florence senior midfielder David Gonzalez tapped in a crossing shot by Tindall, it changed everything as the game was suddenly tied. “The first goal to tie it got us motivated,” Tindall said. “I know I was feeling better after that.” Northern Burlington also seemed to handle the change well, considering Langley banged in a far side serve from sophomore forward Elijah Font five minutes after Gonzalez’ equalizer. The bigger concern was that Tindall, the area’s leading scorer, got a confidence boost. After starting a play with a pass to senior midfielder Eddie Smith with a little over eight minutes to go, no one picked up Tindall as he curled to the far side of the net when Smith sent a bouncing shot that was knocked off the crossbar by Greyhounds junior goalkeeper George Senf. The ball dropped at Tindall’s feet, where he emphatically kicked in his 13th goal of the season. But he was not done. The younger son of former Trenton High head coach Dave Tindall came back two minutes later to track down a lead pass from sophomore forward Max Kyeremeh and score his 14th goal. “He has a good ability to turn,” Langley said of Tindall, “but he’s just like any other player.” Suddenly trailing, Northern Burlington never let up, getting off three good shots down the stretch, only to see Florence sophomore goalkeeper Michael Habingreither (11 saves) end the waiting with a save on each.
