CHICOPEE (WWLP) - Congress has avoided a government shutdown after the Senate passed a funding bill Wednesday night. Do Healey-Harris connections help Massachusetts get federal funding? The Senate passed the measure with a vote of 78 to 18, and all opposing votes were Republicans. It comes just hours after lawmakers passed the measure, which funds the government at current levels through December 20. The legislation includes $231 million additionally for the Secret Service to protect presidential candidates but does not include a proposal that would require Americans nationwide to show proof of citizenship to register to vote. Speaker Mike Johnson spoke on Congress passing the bill and assured there will be no omnibus spending package in December that wraps all spending bills into one. "We worked very hard to break that tradition, as you know we broke it into mini-buses the last time, we've got to build back muscle memory to run Congress the way it's supposed to run and the Republicans are committed to doing that," said Johnson. President Biden also spoke out on the bill, thanking lawmakers for keeping the government open. He vowed that his administration would work to make sure funding is passed for national defense, veterans, and American families. The bill will now go to President Biden to be signed into law. Both chambers are set to adjourn this week and will not return to Washington until after the November 5th election.
