WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — Six media members were inducted into the Rhode Island Radio and Television Hall of Fame on Wednesday night. Among them were two ABC6 alumni, Sean Daly and Betty Jo Cugini-Greene. “I did 42 years in TV news, and I wasn’t sure what it added up to,” Daly said. “This award symbolizes that there was something that it meant, and maybe it meant that we’re about truth.” Daly spent more than three decades reporting in Rhode Island, using the life of former Providence mayor Buddy Cianci to give perspective to his career. “I met Buddy Cianci on my job interview in 1981,” Daly said. “I proceeded to work for 35 years right here in little Rhody, and I covered Buddy all the way until his death and funeral in 2016.” Cugini-Greene, a native Rhode Islander, said her first on-air opportunity came with ABC6. “They said ‘come on up and just try it,’” Cugini-Greene said. “The late Bill Rappleye was there, and he would do the morning cut-ins during Good Morning America, and if there was a story that he was assigned to then I would do the morning cut-ins.” “It was a wonderful experience,” she added “I really cherished those days at Channel 6.” Daly and Cuigni-Greene were inducted alongside Chris DiPaola, Joe Hasset, Dan Yorke, and Paul Zangari. Cugini-Greene said the event is a reminder of the strong state of the market. “Really it’s the people who are the viewers of Channel 6, Channel 10, Channel 12,” Cugini said. “They’re the winners, because they get to see different newscasts, different people, and different takes on stories. That’s really what journalism is all about.” “TV news was the most fun you could have and still get paid for it,” Daly said. “Anyone lucky enough to have had this career is lucky enough.” Categories: News, Rhode Island
