PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has been awarded a $900,000 grant to explore connecting major transportation hubs in the state by bus. RIPTA wants to find ways to connect more of Rhode Island's most-populated communities while continuing to push forward the state's green initiatives and cutting carbon emissions. The project would connect major transportation hubs, downtown areas, business districts, large commercial areas, and neighborhoods through light rail and bus lines. RIPTA Interim CEO Chris Durand calls it the first step in providing faster and more reliable service. RELATED: Revamped RIPTA bus stops unveiled at CCRI "It represents a significant opportunity for investment into our shared future through improved transit, particularly by enhancing access in high-demand corridors for our most transit-dependent residents, thereby improving access to jobs and essential services," he said. One of the biggest goals of the proposed project is to get more people riding the bus, or using public transportation, than driving cars. They are looking for the public's input, but the window is closing to do so. Two in-person meetings have already been held this week, but a third is scheduled for Thursday night in Providence, and the last one is on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in Warwick. There is also an online survey open until Monday, Oct. 7. Anyone who needs help with the online survey can contact (401) 784-9500 ext. 2012. Click here to take the survey Close Thanks for signing up!
