It will be a mainly quiet Thursday with a mix of sun and clouds. Temperatures will climb in the mid and upper 70s. A few spotty showers are possible by the late afternoon and evening. This will be a great day to get any errands or needed lawn work done. By tomorrow, we will be tracking wind-whipped rain from the remnants of what is now Hurricane Helene. Helene is a category 1 hurricane as of 6:30 AM Thursday morning. This storm will intensify as it continues to pass over the very warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. Helene may be upgraded to a category 3 or 4 storm before making landfall somewhere near the Florida Big Bend area. Remnants of this system track here and will bring impacts as early as Thursday night. Winds will pickup Thursday evening and rain will spread into the state during the overnight hours. Expect a soggy start to Friday morning with winds gusting 20-30 mph. While there may be some breaks in the rain Friday afternoon, it will remain rather wet on through the evening with some heavy downpours possible. Winds will continue to pickup through the day and by Friday evening, winds could be gusting up to 50 mph. These conditions may lead to power outages. There are still some uncertainties in how far north this system will track. Overall, we know that areas south of I-70 will see the greatest rainfall with lesser totals to the north. How much less remains the question. Overall, rainfall totals of 1-3" look favorable in the southern half of central Indiana with a range of 1/2"-1" in areas north. This could change so check back for updates. We keep the unsettled weather around through the weekend into next week. Our next shot at a completely dry day doesn't come until mid next week.
