Fairport Harbor is getting ready to update its message sign that’s situated on the front lawn of Village Hall. Village Council, during its most recent meeting, approved purchasing and installation of a new sign, which is described as an LED illuminated electronic message center. Fairport Harbor will buy the sign and have it set up by Agile Sign and Lighting Maintenance Inc. of Eastlake. The village will pay for the new sign with $19,570 in funding from a NOPEC Energized Community Grant. NOPEC, which is formally known as Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council, provides energy aggregation programs for communities throughout Ohio. The organization uses the principle of buying in bulk in an attempt to get lower rates on electricity and natural gas for its members. Fairport Harbor has been a NOPEC electric and gas community since 2002. Energized Community Grants are offered by NOPEC to help its member communities implement energy savings or energy infrastructure measures. Eligible projects include LED lighting, traffic signal and electrical upgrades; insulation; energy-efficient windows or air conditioners; and generators. Fairport Harbor is acquiring an LED message sign that can be programmed remotely to display interchangeable information and messages. These announcements can be read day and night by passing motorists and pedestrians. Currently, the front yard of Village Hall, located at 220 Third St., has an old-fashioned sign in which letters and numbers can be arranged manually to spell out announcements and messages. In December, the village received a NOPEC Energized Community Grant totaling about $30,784. Mayor Timothy Manross said NOPEC also authorized the village to use some of the grant funding for a second project. Village government leaders want to install a new LED message sign at a place known as “the point” near the entrance to Fairport Harbor, Manross said. It is a patch of grass situated between three traffic lanes near the intersection of High and East streets. While the point would be a highly visible place for an LED message sign, a technology issue must be addressed first, Manross said. “We’re just not entirely sure how we’re going to get electric to (a sign at the point) yet,” the mayor said. “So we’re going to have to have further discussions and things of that nature to see if we can actually put one there now.” Currently, the point is occupied by a wooden “Welcome to Fairport Harbor” sign.
