ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – The Irondequoit Police Department will be the first agency in our area to use a new device that detects substances other than alcohol during roadside stops. The device is called 'SoToxa meter' and those behind it claim it can recognize up to five different drugs including cannabis and amphetamines that do not appear on a breathalyzer test. Officers will still need to make all the visual observations before pulling someone over. The device is used voluntarily and only after a Drug Recognition Expert with the department has performed a test. Officials tell News 8 that the department only has one device, but these first steps are crucial to keeping roadways safe. The Town of Greece is also looking into adapting the 'SoToxa Meter' into their department as well.
