OCEANSIDE, Calif.(FOX 5/KUSI) – Exactly five months after a fire tore through the end of the Oceanside Pier, the city is moving forward with plans for demolition. City council unanimously approved roughly $1.3 million dollars to go toward permits and everything that comes with demolition so they can get one step closer to rebuilding. It’s a process that has taken time, given needed approval from the Coastal Commission and other state and federal agencies. Carlsbad leaders reluctantly approve multi-use development, calling Sacramento ‘bullies’ "We are along the coast and we are out over the water and one of the things that we have to worry about is marine life and making sure we’re not disturbing them," said Brian Thomas, city engineer for Oceanside. Demolition will include the restaurant building that housed the old Ruby’s Diner and the Brine Box kiosk. Thomas says these next steps are also expected to help the fire investigation itself. "There’s still some things that we just couldn’t get to because of the damage we can’t even access the buildings right now there's no floor in there," Thomas said. Work is expected to start in the next few weeks, so people can expect to see scaffolding and safeguards to prevent any debris from falling into the ocean. The demolition process is projected to wrap up by December. The city says most of the work will be done in the fall and winter seasons, so they can keep the pier open to the public as much as possible. Rebuilding is expected to cost at least $17 million and take about three years. The investigation into the fire is ongoing, but officials hope to have a final report soon after demolition begins.
