(KRON) -- A Massachusetts man was sentenced to five years in prison for a scam in which he targeted Target using the store's gift cards, the United States Department of Justice said. Michael O'Brien, Jr., 32, stole at least $508,000 from Target. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and five counts of wire fraud. He would then return the gift cards for a full refund, the DOJ said. O'Brien's scheme affected locations in 36 states, including California. He used more than 1,000 gift cards. O'Brien said he intended to steal more than $1 million using the scheme. In addition to the prison time, he will have to pay Target $508,000 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release.
