PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- A bus driver and an elementary school student were hurt in a fight on a Petersburg school bus Wednesday afternoon, during which a 16-year-old allegedly boarded the bus and became involved in the altercation. Yolonda Brown, acting superintendent of Petersburg City Public Schools, issued a statement the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 25, about a fight on one of the district's school buses that afternoon. "During an afternoon bus route, two students were involved in an altercation and an adult from the community entered the bus and allegedly assaulted the bus driver," Brown said in the statement. The Petersburg Bureau of Police said its officers responded to the 700 block of Halifax St. after receiving a call about a "group of students fighting on a school bus." When they arrived at the scene, they found the involved bus -- which it said carried elementary school-aged children -- in the intersection of Halifax and St. Matthews streets. 11-year-old boy identified as victim of shooting in Richmond’s East End Both the bus driver and a male student were injured during the incident. Police said the boy was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Brown said the bus driver's injuries also required hospitalization. Investigators later arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection to the incident, who was charged with malicious wounding and trespassing on a school bus. Whether or not he is the "adult" the school division said allegedly attacked the bus driver is not confirmed at this time -- police did not explicitly state the teenager's role in the altercation. The 16-year-old is being held pending his appearance in court. Brown said this sort of behavior will not be tolerated. "It is the responsibility of our entire school community to create a safe and supportive environment for our students and staff," Brown said. "Anyone who neglects this responsibility will be addressed in accordance with the law."
