WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) -- Rhode Island's Department of Health issued a public health advisory in Woonsocket on Wednesday because of an ongoing increase in drug overdoses. According to state health officials, the city had 376 reported non-fatal opioid overdoses per 100,000 people, more than double what it is statewide (185 per 100,000). The health department said they monitor these numbers with their non-fatal overdose Integrated Surveillance System. Data released for 2023's overdose death numbers showed that although overdose deaths went down 7.3% statewide, Woonsocket had the highest rate, which is 67.4 per 100,000 people. Beauchamp added that the city got $429,000 from an opioid settlement. The money has been directed to "some of the agencies that deal with this on a direct basis." City Council President John Ward, who is running against Beauchamp in November, said "there's two fronts that this has to be faced on." "Dealing with the homeless population, finding some kind of affordable housing alternatives for them," Ward said.
