MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A mother is facing a charge of aggravated child abuse and neglect after police say she tried to push her son out of a moving car and stabbed him with a screwdriver Tuesday afternoon. Miriam Castillo, 44, is also charged with domestic assault and is being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $40,000 bond. The victim told police his mother was driving recklessly after she picked him up from Hickory Ridge Middle School and tried to push him out of the vehicle. Police said Castillo was on her way to pick up her daughter from Newberry Elementary when it happened. Miriam Castillo (SCSO) The child said he called his father, who told him to take the keys out of the ignition when the car came to a stop. The boy said he tried to grab the keys, but his mother bit him on his hand and arm and stabbed him in the leg with a screwdriver, police said. According to witnesses, Castillo got out of her car on Newberry Avenue and began chasing her son around her vehicle. One woman said the boy was yelling, "She is trying to kill me," and she jumped in to help him. Police investigate two fires at auto repair shop, arrest made in one case Police said Castillo had a strong odor of alcohol and admitted she had been drinking. Officers said they were unable to get a statement from Castillo about the incident because she was under the influence. The victim was treated for minor injuries on the scene and was released to his father. Castillo is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.
