(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has released more information and video footage of a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred at the Walmart on East Platte Avenue at the beginning of September. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: One dead in officer-involved shooting at Walmart on Platte According to CSPD's Significant Event Briefing, officers located an unoccupied stolen car in the parking lot of the Platte Walmart around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and requested assistance from the extra duty officers at Walmart in identifying the people from the car. CSPD explained that extra duty officers are CSPD police officers who are hired in their off time to provide security and police services to businesses that request and pay for them. The extra duty officers identified two people from the car —a man was identified as the driver and a woman as the passenger—and provided their descriptions to the responding patrol officers. As the two suspects were leaving the store, Officer Nicholas Cassalia identified himself as a police officer and ordered the suspects to put their hands up. The woman did as instructed, however the man began backing away from Officer Cassalia and into the store. Courtesy: Colorado Springs Police Department CSPD's briefing video slows down both the body-worn camera (BWC) footage and the store's security footage to show the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Tyler Jacob Ben, pulling a handgun from the waistband of his pants as the officer approaches. CSPD said a brief struggle ensued, before Officer Cassalia fired shots, hitting Ben multiple times. The handgun can then be seen in Ben's hand in the BWC footage following the shooting. CSPD said the gun was found to be loaded at the time. Officers can be seen providing medical aid, though Ben was declared dead on scene by responding paramedics. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) responded to investigate the shooting and will provide its findings to the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office to determine whether the officer's use of force was justified.
