MINOT, ND (KXNET) — The 45th Annual Norsk Høstfest is back, filled to the brim, with all things Scandinavian. At Copenhagen Hall, for instance, there are many artisans on-hand, including wood workers, and Phil Holtan is one of them. He's been a vendor at the Høstfest for many years. He's been there 30 times, in fact. He's a woodturner who makes bowls, along with other pieces of homemade art. Norwegians like what's called corky wood, and he specializes in making bowls out of burls or knots on trees. Early taste of Norsk Høstfest comes to Marketplace Foods Bowls made out of burls are an old-timey Scandinavian thing, because those burls are hard to find. Using his skills, he's made his own invention based on a Scandinavian idea of the kransekake cake. "And what the Kransekake and this say, the rings say forever, the evergreen means evergreen forever, so it is a strong symbol of love and relationships that last forever," said Holtan. You can catch him throughout the Norsk Høstfest doing wood turning demonstrations down at Copenhagen Hall. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
