Baton Rouge organizations gather for National Day of Remembrance for Homicide Victims

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Organizations across Baton Rouge gathered together to honor victims lost to gun violence and domestic violence for National Day of Remembrance for Homicide Victims.
Survivor-led organizations, like The Great Exchange and Save our Sons, hosted the first of its kind joint collaboration event to remember those who lost their lives, and for families and victims who are grieving to come together in unity. The event showcased the resources that each organization offers for those who are seeking help with coping a loss of a loved one.
Mary Ransom lost her daughter Courtney Whitfield in November 2017 to domestic violence and her son Laquan Whitfield to gun violence in May 2021. She founded the organization Stop, Pause, and Pray to help bring an end to violence.

She says events like this are important to show those who are affected are not alone.
"And let loved ones know that we do care, not just about us, it's about everyone that lost loved ones," said Ransom.
Statistics show Baton Rouge is set to pass homicide numbers from 2023. The joint collaboration of the event is to bring awareness to the effects that are taking place in Baton Rouge with homicides.
Kenya Jarmon is one of the co-organizers of the event, who also lost siblings to gun violence. She says although this is the first time all survivor-led organizations collaborated, it won't be the last.
