BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana ranks as a top state with a high rate of adults using cocaine.
A new study by an addiction treatment resource, Addiction Treatment Magazine, shows Louisiana ranks as the ninth U.S. state with a high rate of adults using cocaine.
The data comes from a 2022 national survey on drug use and health from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The ranking shows how many adults over 18 years old have used cocaine within the past year across each state.
Colorado leads with the most adults using cocaine, with an estimated total of 138,000 adults, or 3.06% of Colorado's adult population.
Louisiana has roughly 77,000 adults who have used cocaine in the past year, which equals about 2.23%, according to the data.

“Cocaine can lead to both physical and psychological dependence, and its use is associated with a wide range of negative health, social, and economic outcomes," said a spokesperson for Addiction Treatment Magazine. "Younger adults are at a particularly high risk for developing substance use disorders, including cocaine addiction, because their brains are still developing. There is no single cure for cocaine addiction, but there is a combination of treatments addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction.”
Here are the top 10 states where adults have used cocaine within the last year.
