COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The Columbus Crew were unable to win their third trophy in nine months as they fell to Club America on penalty kicks in Wednesday's Campeones Cup final at Lower.com Field. Néstor Araujo scored the deciding goal for Club America in a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over the Columbus Crew after a 1-1 draw. After the Crew's Malte Amundsen hit the crossbar with his attempt, goalkeeper Patrick Schulte couldn't stop Araujo and America prevailed. Victor Dávila scored in the 68th minute to give Club America the lead, but Amundsen’s goal in the 77th minute tied the match. Despite being the holders of MLS Cup and Leagues Cup, the Crew also have two defeats in finals since June and both are to Mexican clubs. Columbus fell in the CONCACAF Champions Cup final on June 1 at Pachuca 3-0 before losing Wednesday to Club America. Club America is the fifth team to win the Campeones Cup and ties the overall series as Mexican clubs and MLS teams have split the six finals evenly since 2018. The Crew get back to work on Saturday when they play on the road against D.C. United, their fifth-to-last MLS regular season game. Columbus still sits in third-place in the Eastern Conference behind second-place FC Cincinnati. Both Ohio clubs sit on 56 points but Cincy currently owns the first tiebreaker with one more win than Columbus. The Crew have one game in hand on Cincinnati and could hop into second place with an extra victory. Both Columbus and FCC sit eight points behind Inter Miami in the East standings. The MLS regular season concludes on Oct. 19.
